Tomatis therapy was invented 40 years ago by a French neurologist and otolaryngologist – professor Alfred Tomatis. Tomatis has discovered that high frequency sounds, contrary to low frequency sounds, in a very specific way stimulate brain’s functioning. As a consequence, different cognitive abilities – memory, concentration, language skills etc. improve significantly. According to theoretic principles which underlie Tomatis trainings, during the therapy high frequency sounds are being used.WHAT DOES TOMATIS THERAPY CONSIST IN?
Tomatis therapy consists mainly in listening to appropriately filtered sound material which is given by means of so-called electronic ear. These specially mixed sounds, reaching a patient through his/her ears and bones, stimulate functioning of the Central Nervous System. During each phase of Tomatis therapy it is possible to talk, play or even sleep.First phase – 30 hours extended over 12 days, 2,5 hour per day in this phase a patient learns how to work with his/her own voice
Second phase– 4-8 weeks after the first phase; 15 hours extended over 6 days, 2,5 hour per day; in this phase a patient learns how to work with his/her own voice
WHO SHOULD ATTEND TOMATIS THERAPY?

DIAGNOSIS
Tomatis therapy is preceded by audio-phonologic consultation during which hearing-dominance and lateralization are being examined. In occasion of this audio-phonologic test we hold as well a detailed interview concerning general patient’s state.
HEARING AND LISTENING
- Professor Tomatis was differentiating hearing from listening. In his opinion, hearing is passive whereas listening requires involvement and activity. With listening must hold together either the ability of acquiring new information or filtering them. Sometimes a child does not manifest any hearing disorders but still he/she is not able to listen. In such case, a patient usually has problems with selecting and differentiating sounds, sometimes also he /she fails to associate correctly sound with its graphic equivalent. The above disorders are often compounded by hyperactivity and poor concentration.
